— About Barbering —
A time-honored trade.
Barbering is one of the world’s oldest professions. The word “barber” comes from the Latin barba, meaning beard. For centuries the local barber was a cornerstone of the community — and from the Middle Ages into the 1700s, “barber-surgeons” were trusted with everything from haircuts and shaves to pulling teeth and minor surgery.
That history is why the barber pole still spins outside shops today. Its stripes trace back to the barber-surgeon era: red for blood and white for the bandages, wound around a pole that represented the staff a patient gripped during treatment. In America, blue was added to the spiral — a nod to the nation’s colors — and it remains the universal sign of a true barbershop.
What the Pole Means
- Red — the blood of the barber-surgeon era
- White — clean bandages and a fresh shave
- Blue — American pride and tradition
